Yes, this amazing hybrid picking lick is…a country guitar lick, and a funk guitar lick. It dices, it slices 🙂 Sometimes guitar licks get pigeonholed into one music style or another. When in reality the exact same guitar lick can be played over different backgrounds and take on a new character depending on the context.
The guitar lick in this video guitar lesson can just as easily be played in a funk tune, or a country tune. It’s just a dominant 7th guitar lick that uses some hybrid picking. And while hybrid guitar picking is often used in country guitar, it also creates a percussive sound that works well in Funk. So don’t fear using your chickin’ pickin’ guitar licks in your Funk.

Funky Country Hybrid Picking Lick in A
Hybrid guitar picking is where you use a combination of your pick and right hand fingers to play notes. So for this guitar lick the lowest note is going to be played with your pick, and the upper notes are played with your right hand 2nd and 3rd fingers.
Funky Country Hybrid Picking Lick in D
You can easily move this guitar lick anywhere on the neck. The 2nd note in the lick on the 1st string is the note you want to use as your guide. So in when this guitar lick was played over an A7 chord, the 2nd note on the 1st string was an A note. If you want to play this hybrid picking lick over a D7 chord, all you have to do is move everything up 5 frets so that note is a D.
Funky Country Hybrid Picking Lick in E
And the same guitar lick played over an E7 chord would be play so that note would be at the 12th fret on the 1st string.
Blues in A Chord Progression
Now that you can play this hybrid picking lick over A7, D7 and E7 chord, you can play over a blues in the key of A. So hey, it’s a blues guitar lick too 🙂
Since the lick is 2 measures long you will play it twice over the A7 chord in the top line…since that is 4 measures. But then just play the lick 1 time for each of the other chords.
