Chuck Berry Guitar Lick Tablature – 3rd Position
So here is the exact same lick, just moved down 2 frets. But I’m not switching keys, only moving the idea to a different position of an A Minor Pentatonic scale. Yes, moving this guitar lick down 2 frets could be thought of in the key of G…but that’s not what we are doing in this case.
Here is a box pattern of the A Minor Pentatonic scale where these notes would come out of. It’s the next box position lower on the neck from the one you played on page 1 of this lesson.
A Minor Pentatonic Scale – 3rd Position
The suggested fingering below is just one option for playing this scale. You could also play this using your 3rd finger where the 4th is indicated.
While these notes do come out of the A Minor Pentatonic scale in this position, when you are improvising you would still want end your phase on a note that would sound good with the chord that’s being played at the moment. And in the key of A…A is a good safe note to use as an ending. So here is how you could end the guitar lick in this position to help resolve it in the key of A.
Chuck Berry Guitar Lick Tablature – 10th Position
There is one more position of an A Minor Pentatonic that our lick will work in. This one is up at the 10th fret.
And here is the A Minor Pentatonic scale form in the 10th position.
A Minor Pentatonic Scale – 10th Position
Again you would need to resolve this lick…so below is one way you could do that by ending on the A note on the 2nd string 10th fret.
Chuck Berry Jam Tracks
Now test out your new ideas with a couple of Chuck Berry style Jam Tracks. Both are just an A major chord, but at different speeds.
I have put the 3 lick ideas and scale positions on screen so you can have them right in front of you as you are jamming.
You can also download mp3 versions of these jam tracks below in the “Guitar Lesson Downloads”.
