Often you will need to make some adjustments to your guitar or do other basic guitar maintenance. Changing the strings, adjusting the neck, or setting the intonation. This is what is referred to as a Guitar Setup. This lesson is all about helping you make these adjustments to your guitar yourself. A DIY guitar setup guide.
While you can take your guitar to a pro, if you can learn a few basics you will save yourself both time and money.
There will still be times when you will want to take your guitar to a skilled repairman or guitar luthier. But you would not want to have to take your car to the shop every time you needed gas or air in your tires. So the same goes for doing basic guitar maintenance.
Changing the Strings on Your Guitar
The first step with any guitar setup is to change your strings. Below are a couple of lessons that cover how to change the strings on both and acoustic and electric guitar.
After changing your strings follow the instructions in the lesson below to fix a very common guitar tuning problem.
Adjusting the Neck of the Guitar
The next step will be to check and adjust the neck of your guitar if necessary.
Setting the Intonation of Your Guitar
The last step in our do it yourself guitar setup is going to only be for electric guitars. It is setting the intonation. There is actually no way to set the intonation on acoustic guitars. At least not easily. If the intonation is out on your acoustic guitar after changing your strings and adjusting the neck…take it to a pro.
Use Common Sense…
For things like adjusting the neck on your guitar, you may one to get some practice on an older guitar first. Rule #1, don’t force anything! You can do damage to your guitar, but if you use a little common sense you will be fine.
