Jazz Guitar Chords in the II V I Chord Progression in Bb – Version 2
The next set of jazz guitar chords are a little more “jazzy”. For the II chord you are going to play a Cm7(11). That’s a Cm7 chord with an extra jazz spice thrown in called a “tension”. So Cm7 with an added tension 11, or sometimes called a Cm11 chord (C minor 11).
Then for the V chord you will have an F7(9). Or sometimes called an F9 chord. And then for the I chord you are going to play a Bb6/9 chord. That’s the great thing about playing Jazz. There are all kinds of ways you can decorate and substitute other compatible chords. So Bb6/9 is going to substitute for the the Bbmaj7 chord you were playing.
So now plug your new jazz guitar chords into the II V I chord progression we have been playing.
Jazz Guitar Chords in the II V I Chord Progression in Bb – Version 3
For the last variation of our II V I chord progression, we are just going to change what you are playing for the V chord. In the last version you played an F7(9) chord. Now we are going to play 2 different chords for that V. An F7(#9) and an F7(b9). You can just think of these as even more spicy versions of the F7 chord. And by playing F7(#9) followed by F7(b9) going to Bb6/9, you will have a nice smooth sounding melody note on the 2nd string for the chord progression.
So in this last version of the our II V I jazz chord progression, you will have 2 chords in the 2nd measure. So 2 beats of a F7(#9) and 2 beats of F7(b9).
Of course this guitar lesson just gives you a taste of a couple of different jazz guitar chord possibilities. That is one reason I love playing jazz guitar. Every time a play a song, I can explore different ways to play the chords.
