Guitar Questions & Answers

These are questions that I have received via e-mail. (Sometimes paraphrased removing multiple "likes" and "dudes":) The answers are for the most part what I e-mailed back, with possibly some additions.

Question #1 - In the theory section, on the constructing major scales page, on the answers page..., I found answer to the Gb major scale shown as: Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F Gb. I thought that there was no such thing as a Cb note, shouldn't that be a B instead?

Question #2 - Any hints on how to break-in the fingers on my left hand? I am in major pain after about 20 minutes of practice. Someone suggested switching to flat wound strings?

Question #3 - I have heard that it is possible to buy a pedal that will make an Electric guitar sound like an acoustic. Is this true? If so, could you kindly give me the manufacturer and the name of this product?

Question #4 -  Can you recommend any good PC guitar programs.  Some of the ones I have seen like Interactive Guitar, seem pretty good but it's hard to tell.  Any suggestions?

Question #5 - I have my moms old acoustic to start out on cuz I heard that if u learn acoustic first that electric is a lot easier. Is that true??

Question #6 - Regarding the A chord......I can easily squeeze three fingers onto one fret. On the other hand, it's almost impossible for me to play the chord with one finger. Is the three finger method going to screw me up at some date in the far distant future when I actually can play this damn thing?

Question #7 - How do you play a B chord?  I see A, C, D, E, F,and G in the basic chord sections, but where is the B?

Question #8 - Why is it harder for me to play standing?

Question #9 - I'm having a hard time making my fingers fit on the finger board, when I try to play a chord my fingers always seem to be touching other strings. Could it be my fingers are just to big?

Question #10 - I would like to know where I could get a good deal on a guitar on the web and what kind of guitar should I get (I want an electric guitar).

Question #11 - I am looking into getting started playing the guitar. I am left handed and I am getting conflicting information on how to start out. Should I start with a right handed guitar and try to learn that way, or stay true to my left handedness?

Question #12 - I was wondering if you could give me some guidelines to figure out the strumming of songs through hearing them on albums, records, etc. And, what are the things that i should look out for in order to get the strumming??

Question #13 - I am borrowing an electric guitar and I can't get the heavy metal sound out of it. It sounds so folky. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need a different guitar?

Question #14 - What's that buzzing sound I get when I strum the strings sometimes? How can I stop it?

Question #15 - How often should I replace the strings on my guitar, and when I do, what strings should I use?

Question #16 - I'm a pretty small lady, only about 5 feet and my hands are kind of small too... I am finding it difficult to make all of my left-hand fingers reach the different frets in each chord. Is this normal? Do they make guitars that are a bit smaller for smaller people?

Question #17 - I am having trouble constructing modes from the scale formulas. I know that the formula for a Phrygian mode is 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7, but I can't seem to apply that to the neck of the guitar. How do I construct an A Phrygian, or a B Phrygian?

Question #18 - What is a Polychord?

Question #19 - How do I tune a 12 string guitar?

Question #20 - Is there any way to control feedback to produce specific pitches?

Question #21 - What is a trill?

Question #22 - I just used the chord finder on this site to find dim7 chords. I was surprised to find that many of these chords have several different names. How can so many names be applied to the same chords?

Question #23 - I just bought a new guitar, and my 6th string makes a buzzing sound every time I play. Is there something wrong with my guitar?

Question #24 - What is the Nashville numbering system?

Question #25 - I just started playing guitar about 2 weeks ago, and I love it. I am not in school right now, so I have been playing guitar 10 hours per day. Do you have any suggestions for things to practice?

Qustion #26 - I have been trying to learn a new song. I know what the chords are, but I just can't hear the guitar part clear enough to pick out the strum patterns. Do you have any suggestions?
