How do I tune a 12 string guitar?

Answer

A 12 string guitar is tuned like this:

The bottom 4 sets of strings (lowest sounding) are tuned in octaves, and the top 2 sets of strings are tuned in unison (the same note).

For the bottom 4 sets, tune the thickest strings just like you would a 6 string guitar. Then tune the thinner partners of those strings to an octave higher than it's mate. Just play the 2 strings together and tune the thinner string to match the thicker, only an octave higher. If you have trouble tuning the thinner strings to an octave, you could play the 12 fret on the thicker strings, and tune the thinner strings to that. Then you would be matching the pitches exactly.

For the top 2 sets of strings, tune both pairs just like you would a 6 string. Each pair should be tuned to the same note.

You can also use an electronic tuner. Electronic tuners do not know the difference between octaves. So you could set the electronic tuner for the 6th string, tune the thicker string. Then tune the thinner partner string using the same setting and you will be good to go.
