Using a timer is a great way to keep your guitar practice time focused. If you know you only have 10 minutes to practice something, that can help you avoid drifting off into mindless noodling and keep on task.
Everyone is different when it comes to the amount of time you can practice on one thing before you need to switch gears and practice something else. For me, it’s about 10 or 15 minutes. Yep, I’m a little ADD…so if I go longer than that I start drifting off without even realizing it.
So when I practice, I use a timer set to 10 minute intervals. Then I switch channels on my brain and practice something else.
After another 10 minutes I may come back to the first topic again. But if I was to practice that first topic for 20 minutes straight there would be diminishing returns after about 10 minutes…and I would loose my focus.
Give it a try. Set the timer below for 10 or 15 minutes. And then when the timer goes off, set it again and work on something different. This will help you keep your practice time more focused and productive.
