How to Change Strings on a
Steel String Acoustic Guitar

In this video guitar lesson I am going to show you how to change the strings on a steel string acoustic guitar. You can apply the same techniques to changing the strings on an electric guitar as well. The only difference is how the strings attach to the bridge of the guitar. How often you should change your strings really depends on a few factors. Like how often you play, whether or not you wash your hands before you play (you should), and your body chemistry. But as a general rule I would say to change your strings at least every 2 or 3 months. If you play a lot, you should change them more often.
Before you get started you are going to need 3 things...in addition to your guitar.
1. a set of guitar strings
2. a peg winder
3. needle nose pliers, or wire cutters
The brand and gauge (thickness) of guitar strings that you use is a matter of personal preference. I use Martin Light strings which go from .012 (inches) for the 1st string to .054 for the 6th string. So if you don't know what you should get, that's where I would suggest starting. If you are primarily an electric player who also plays acoustic occasionally, you might want a little lighter string. Martin Extra Light strings are .010 for the 1st string, to a .047 for the 6th string. There are all kinds of brands and gauges of strings. Some even have different coatings that are suppose make them last longer, or change the tone in different ways. So you can start experimenting with some different ones until you find what is right for you.
As you will see in the video below, I change my strings in a sitting position. I find it easiest to brace the guitar between my legs as I am wrapping the strings. Some people like to set the guitar down on a table or work bench. There are also other equally as correct methods of changing the strings, but give this one a try. Changing the strings on your guitar can be a challenge the first time you do it, but have no fear...it get's easier each time you do it.
