If you are playing basic open position chords, you can usually keep your thumb a little higher on the back of the neck. Keeping your thumb higher in this case will actually make those types of chords easier to play.

If you are playing a power chords or barre chords, your thumb will need to be in the home base position, or you will never be able to reach the notes.
