Chords that are used in Funk are usually played on the top 4 strings; a lot of the times you will just play 2 or 3 notes. This gives a brighter more percussive sound to the guitar part. Here are some basic chords to get you started, but they are by no means your only chord choices. Understanding the theory behind these chord is another sermon, just learn the names and where the roots of the chords are (the red dots). Sometimes the roots of the chord are not played. The position of the root is shown on the chord grid as an open red circle. This is known as an assumed root, and is used as a reference to know what fret to play the chord. A couple of major chords are shown, but as an over generalization they are not used as much as minor, or Dominant 7th chords. The 9th chord is just a decorated 7th chord, and the 13th is just more decoration of the same chord.
